Step 1: Take the Tica Bus from Liberia to Rivas, Nicaragua
Your international journey kicks off in Liberia, Costa Rica, a convenient gateway city in Guanacaste, close to the Nicaraguan border.
Liberia has a international airport and most travelers use it as a jumping off point for exploring La Fortuna, the Beaches, and also find it more convenient to fly into Liberia and then cross into Nicaragua, rather than flying into Managua, the capital of Nicaragua.
The most reliable and comfortable way to travel from Liberia to Nicaragua is with the Tica Bus, a Central American coach service catering to tourists and locals alike.
Tica Bus Schedule from Liberia:
- Departure Times: 6:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM (subject to change, always confirm online)
- Cost: $30–$33 USD (one-way)
- Booking Site: Tica Bus Official Website
- Pick-up Location: Just past the main roundabout on Highway 1 (Interamericana Norte) in northwestern Liberia, between Avenida 25 and 29, near the pedestrian bridge.
What to Expect:
The Tica Bus offers reclining seats, A/C, onboard bathrooms, and border assistance—making it a popular choice for the long-haul ride. While the ride from Liberia to Rivas only takes about 2.5 hours, most of that time will be spent at the Peñas Blancas border, so plan accordingly.
✅ Practical Tip: Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Tica Bus may run early or late depending on the day and border traffic. Its not unusually for the Tica Bus to arrive 45 minuites early or up to 90 minutes late. The pickup location can be hard to find, but as of 2025, its literally on the side of the highway just before the walking bridge and just after the round-a-bout. There’s a small bus awning where the bus stops. Depending on the season, it can be very hot and offer little shade, or it can be pouring rain, so its best to bring some sun or rain cover.
Step 2: Cross the Costa Rica–Nicaragua Border at Peñas Blancas
Within an hour of departing Liberia, you’ll reach the Peñas Blancas border crossing, the main route between northern Costa Rica and southern Nicaragua. This is often the slowest part of the journey.
Exiting Costa Rica:
- Exit Tax: $8 USD (online) or $10 at the border. Sometimes the Tica Bus will include this in the ticket price but may charge a $2 handling fee, so ask for a breakdown and keep your receipt. Often, a Tica Bus employee will come through the bus to collect payment. Be sure to have small bills ready. USD is fine.
Entering Nicaragua:
- Entry Fees: $1 municipal fee + $13 immigration fee
- Currency: USD is accepted, but they don’t give change, so bring exact bills.
- Customs Note: Drones, professional cameras, and binoculars may be confiscated or questioned. If unsure, declare these items honestly.
✅ Practical Tip: Bring small U.S. bills ($1, $5, $10). Most fees are cash-only, and local agents won’t provide change. Also, be aware that bringing in drones, binoculars, or cameras may significantly slow down the entry process. If possible, leave these items behind because they Tica Bus has a schedule it needs to make, and if customs process takes too long to inspect your items, the Tica Bus will leave, with or without you and your items.
Step 3: Get from Rivas to San Jorge Ferry Terminal
Once you’ve crossed into Nicaragua, the Tica Bus continues north and drops you off in Rivas, a small but busy town 30 minutes from the ferry terminal at San Jorge, which serves as the main port to Ometepe Island.
The Tica Bus will drop you off on the side of the road, near the supermarket Maxi Pali. Be prepared to be swarmed by agressive vendors.
How to get from Rivas to San Jorge Port:
- Taxis or Moto-Taxis/Bikes/ Tuk-Tuks: Aggressively offered and usually overpriced at $10–$20 USD. Politely decline and negotiate to $3–$5 USD max.
- Collectivos (Shared Vans): Walk 200-300 meters north to the gas station at the junction of Highway 1 and NN-221 to catch a shared van for just 40 cordobas (~$1.10 USD).
This 15-minute ride will drop you off directly at the Puerto de San Jorge ferry terminal.
✅ Practical Tip: Avoid overpaying by figuring out what the standard fare is before hopping into any vehicle. Google Translate can help with quick negotiation.
Step 4: Take the Ferry from San Jorge to Ometepe Island
Welcome to the most scenic part of your journey—the ferry ride across Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe Island! Ferries from San Jorge Port run daily to the ports of Moyogalpa (the main town) and San José del Sur.
The Taxi will drop you off near the gate to the Ferry Terminal. When you enter the Ferry Terminal, you will have to pay a 1 dollar ($40 Cordaba) port entry tax.
Be careful! Sometimes employees prey on travelers not to know the exchange rate. If you don’t give exact amount, you may get short-charged.
ALSO! There are often people loitering near the enterance that may look like employees. They will strike up a conversation, feign friendliness and try to misdirect or scam you. They may lead you to a rental shop and pressure you to rent an ATV or something else unnecessary. There are plenty of rental shops on Omtempe so there’s no need to rent prior to the ferry. Its best to ignore these people and proceed directly to the ticket shop (located 30 meters after the gate) and purchase the ferry tickets. AGAIN! Be careful, as the ferry vendor may overcharge or short-change.
